Temple Beth Shalom was founded in 1960 by five families who desired to
establish a Reform Jewish presence in Anne Arundel County. Services were
originally held in members' homes and later at a fire station and a local
church until the current property was purchased in 1963. In 1998 we dedicated a large additional
building that contains modern classrooms, a library, and temple offices.
Our facilities are situated on an 11-acre parcel of land surrounded by
trees in a country-like setting, with an athletic field, a wonderful
playground, and a nature trail through the woods on the back of the
property. |

The original building, used as the
sanctuary from 1963 through 1973, and as classrooms
until the new education building was dedicated in 1998.

The small gathering of five families forty years ago has grown into a vibrant congregation of approximately 230 member households, representing almost 700 individuals. While our increase in size has brought many benefits, we also recognize the importance of retaining the sense of community that has been a characteristic of our congregation since its founding. We are proud that some of our earliest families are again members of our congregation and some are now represented by second and third generations in the congregation. At the same time, we provide a welcoming atmosphere that encourages even our newest members to participate in all aspects of temple life and to become involved in temple leadership positions.
Eighteen months ago, a severe ice and snowstorm damaged the roof of our sanctuary building and made both the sanctuary and the social hall unusable. After holding services in many different places, a temporary sanctuary has been placed on our synagogue property and we once again worship at home. |
