Miriam Luby Wolfe Scholarship Award

The Miriam Luby Wolfe Scholarship Award is given annually to a young person of Temple Beth Shalom, who demonstrates high academic achievement as well as achievement in the arts or other endeavors. Miriam Luby Wolfe made an enormous impact on the world for someone so young. She was an extraordinary young woman who, in her 20 years, touched and influenced the lives of everyone she knew. Firmly committed to Reform Judaism, she served as co-president of the youth group at Temple Beth Shalom. Her Jewish commitment increased during her years as a student at Syracuse University studying musical theatre. Miriam was tragically killed in the 1988 terrorist bombing of Pan Am flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland. Her family established the award in Miriam’s honor.

To qualify, an applicant must be the child of a current member of Temple Beth Shalom, age 14 through high school graduation. All applicants must submit an essay of any length, usually 2-4 pages double-spaced, sharing with the selection committee a description of their school career, extracurricular activities and interests, TBS involvement, what their Jewish heritage means in their life, and to what purpose they might use the award. The essay must begin with a cover page listing the applicant’s full name, address, telephone number, email address, date of birth, parent name(s), school and grade, and the following certification: “I hereby certify that I am the child of a member in good standing of Temple Beth Shalom and that I solely prepared the attached essay.” The application must be sent in pdf format, if possible.
